For over two thousand years husbands have given their wives marriage
contracts which spoke of their love and commitment to each other.
In the Middle Ages, these documents called Ketubot were elaborately
illuminated. They still are, but with a special difference.
Artist, Shayna Baecker Magid, has created
a version of the marriage contract using visual elements from her
own Hawaiian roots. Its poetic text is based on ancient Hawaiian
oral tradition; the Biblical "Song of Songs"; and a modern Hawaiian
wedding ceremony.
Ka Palapala Male is a new
concept grounded in Hawaiian tradition. A beautiful reminder of
an important and special time to be framed and cherished forever.
